Definitions of Set Subjects for 2011
Abstract
A composition consisting of shapes and colours which are not suggestive of any particular object. Natural or man-made objects may be employed provided that they are not readily recognizable.
Animals (Non-domestic)
A picture of any living animals, birds or insects, either confined or in their natural environment - provided they are not domestic pets.
Against the Light
A picture in which the main source of light lies behind the subject as opposed to the front or sides. Such lighting does not preclude the use of a fill-in light or available light from the camera-side of the subject. Silhouettes are also allowed.
Humorous
A picture with a humorous or whimsical appeal. It need not have been funny from the subject's point of view. The humour should lie in the picture and not merely in the title.
Competition Rules
All entries for Competitions must be submitted at the Club meeting prior to the competition night. No entries accepted later than submission night unless arrangements have been made on the due submission night with the Competition Secretary.
Black & White and Colour Prints
Prints must have the author's name on the back and be in the top left-hand corner where possible. Titles are optional, but are preferred, for the greater interest of all.
Print Size
The maximum print size allowed is 20"x16" unmounted, and if mounted, 20"x16" including the mount.
Black & White Prints are limited to three (3) per member. They should be entirely the work of the author. Commercially processed or computer-contrived prints are not eligible.
Colour Prints (from film) are limited to Three (3) per member. They must have been taken by the Author, but the negatives and prints may be processed by an outside source. Computer-contrived prints are not eligible.
Home Inkjet Printed Photos
The original negatives and/or slides must be provided at the same time as the entry to the competition to be eligible.
Digital Coloured, Digital B&W, and Digital Manipulated Prints are limited to two (2) per member in each of the three categories. A maximum of six (6) prints in total. May be home or commercially printed, but must be entirely the author's own work.
Rules for Digital Competitions
In film-based printing, 'dodging' and 'burning' are legitimate means to an end - a better print. Therefore, a certain amount of 'cleaning up' of a digital print is allowable - provided that no secondary image is introduced. Any 'manipulation' must come from that one image and must not be changed so much that it bears little resemblance to the original image. When an image is added from a secondary source then it becomes 'digitally manipulaed image'. All set subjects in 'straight digital' must be from a single image. A 'Digitally Manipulated Image' is to be directed to the DMI category. A B/W digital image may be obtained by using computer software, as long as it stays as the same image.
Slides are limited to six (6) per member per competition night. That is, three (3) slides in the set-subject and three(3) slides in the open classification; or six (6) slides in the open classification if there is no set subject. Although slides may be commercially processed, they must have been taken by the author.
Photographs (slides or prints) of PAINTINGS, PRINTS or STATUES will not be accepted for competitions except where they form only part of an overall composition.
