MID-YEAR COMPETITION 2010
Each year the club awards Mid-Year trophies for new works. The categories are portraiture, landscape, seascape, digital prints and digital art. Mark Pedlar was the judge for all of the categories, but unfortunately couldn't attend on the presentation night. Mark wrote comments on all of the entries, and some are listed below.
We had a very good night with many quality photos entered and Ian Flint, who is a Life Member of the club, had the honour of presenting the trophies. Congratulations to all the winners and second place holders!

PRESIDENT'S PORTRAITURE TROPHY

1st Place: Bob Griffiths 'End of the Day'
Judge's Comments: This is a wonderful environmental portrait. We get no indication of exactly what he does for a living. However, his expression, clothing, stance and the background lead to a very strong impression. This is a very strong portrait.

2nd Place: Jim McNamara 'Eyes'
Judge's Comments: In this case the subject is well engaged with the photographer. A very pleasing composition.
PETER STRAZDS LANDSCAPE TROPHY

1st Place: Phill Pawson 'Milford Sound'
Judge's Comments: What a wonderful moody shot. The Sound leads you in between towering hills and you get lost in the mist. Congratulations!

2nd Place: Ken McGillick 'Ascending Fox Glacier'
Judge's Comments: Another panorama with impact. There is good detail in the snowy foreground and the creek beyond the murrain carries you well into the image. A worthy second place.
DAVID MUNRO SEASCAPE TROPHY (slides)

1st Place: Jack Flack 'Fishing in the Surf'
Judge's Comments: This image shows a real story and the diagonal nature of the surf drags you into the image. Certainly an excellent seascape telling the story of the fishermen in the surf.

2nd Place: Geoff Doecke 'Silver Seas, Myponga Beach'
Judge's Comments: Both the lighting and the lead in through the uprights have the makings of a great image and I believe it would have been even more powerful having been rotated left to right and projected as a mirror image. Definitely a good second place.
JIM FENEMORE DIGITAL TROPHY

1st Place: Gary Sawyer 'Bay of Fires'
Judge's Comments: Both composition and colours come together to create a truly powerful image. The panoramic presentation only adds to that.
2nd Place: John Vidgeon 'Who you Looking at?'
Judge's Comments: He's in your face. He's disdainful and he's as sharp as a tack. A great animal portrailt.
JIM FENEMORE DIGITAL ART TROPHY

1st Place: Carolyn Griffiths 'A Time to Die'
Judge's Comments: A wonderful image! The colours are complementary of one another and give a feeling of senescence. In this case the lack of a centre of interest is what imparts power.
2nd Place: Bob Griffiths 'Victor Harbor'
Judge's Comments: The muted tones and hazy nature are strong components of impact in this image. This is only heightened by the composition dragging your eye into the background.
