One windy afternoon, 4 avid photographers, 2 supportive partners and a couple of dogs took the trek down to Goolwa Beach to patiently wait for the full moon to rise over the sand dunes. As they were waiting, watching the sun set in the distance, the clouds slowly rolled in. The sun was slowly swallowed by the clouds before it touched the horizon, disappearing without an opportunity for a photograph.
The photographers turned, and waited expectantly for the moon to rise. To the left, over the ocean, they could see the rain clouds roll in. A slow motion race had started. Would the rain drive them away, or would the moon win through?
The wind became stronger, the temperature dropped. Black rain clouds rolled ominously towards their lookout. Before the moon reached the horizon it was decided to pack up and leave their windy post. As the last camera was lovingly packed into its bag, the call came, ‘Is that the moon just coming up?’
With the speed of Superman changing in a phone booth, the cameras were unpacked and remounted on their tripods. Slowly an orange tinted moon poked its head over the horizon. The colours were muted, the clouds hiding the sky. A few photos were snapped before the moon passed out of sight under the clouds.
As with all photographic treks, no matter how much planning, you can never predict the weather. It was still a great few hours, talking about photography and techniques. And who knows, there may be a great photo hiding in their cameras, waiting to be discovered. |
