13th July - Close-up Workshop
There are many ways to capture subjects close-up.
Jim Fenemore showed us a visual feast of close-up photography, and led a discussion about equipment and techniques to try. Some of the tips were: keep the camera still - use a tripod and remote release; wide-angle lenses 20-35mm can be very effective for taking close-ups; however, nothing beats the dedicated macro lens for magnification and optical quality. For a low cost alternative try extension tubes or close-up attachment filters. Modern digital SLR's with a 'live-view' feature assist when focusing subjects at selective and high magnification.
8th June - Fleurieu Calendar 2011 Photo Selection
Every year the camera club produces a Fleurieu Penninsula Calendar - the diversity of the subject matter never ceases to amaze us! We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of South Australia and well done to our photographers for once again capturing the best of the Fleurieu. The 2011 calendar will be available for sale at the 2010 Photography Expo in September.
New Competition Category - Black & White Digital Prints
Jack Flack, our President, asked for a show-of-hands on who would be interested in competing in a monthly B&W Digital Print competition. An encouraging 18 photographers put up their hands. So it was decided that the new category will be included in next year's program. So get your B&W eyes in focus for 2011!
April and May Competition Nights
Emily Shepherd, who is a professional photographer for the wine industry, judged the April comp. She was impressed with the quality of the prints and this showed with the 14 honours and 28 merits awarded.
On 25th May Trevor Baldock judged 76 entries, awarding 16 honours and 18 merits. He hasn't visited the club for a few years and mentioned how good it was to see a bigger and noticeably more vibrant club! He also commented on the quality of the work, and offered encouragement to members to enter into both state and national competitions.

11th May - Photoshop Part II
The second part of the Photoshop program held by Richard Keane at the Hallett Cove School was again a huge success, with not one of the twenty computers to spare. Richard's knowledge of photography and the use of Photoshop benefited everyone. The subjects covered were: Film scanning; basic graphic design; simple and complex collages; creative and surreal artwork.
13th April - Portraiture Workshop
There is much to consider when photographing people. Jim Fenemore held two workshops which covered both studio and outdoor portraits. Here a few points for outdoors: The face and expression should be predominant. Ensure that the subject is relaxed and in a positive mood; Long lenses with wide apertures are most effective for head and shoulder portraits taken outside in daylight; Slightly overcast with the sun diffused is ideal.
Standard Studio Lighting: Key Light is the main light, to one side and slightly higher than the eye. Fill Light placed oppostie the key light to soften the shadows, giving an effect similar to window lighting. Rim Light is generally a hair light, placed behind the subject and higher than the key or the fill.
February and March Competition Nights
Competition night is always enjoyable and we are off to a good start having lots of entries with subject matter never ceasing to amaze us. On 23rd February Susie Lipert judged 75 entries awarding 19 honours and 10 merits. Four photographers were more than happy getting 10/10. Well done!
On 23rd March, Don Brooks was our judge. He was a bit more critical awarding 12 honours and 13 merits. He commented on a lack of sharpness in some of the prints, a point for all of us to consider especially when shoting nature. To see the competition results.....
9th March 2010 - Basic Photoshop at Hallett Cove
Each year Richard Keane, the photography teacher from the Hallett Cove R-12 School, invites the club to a digital imaging workshop. The school has a very well equipped photography facility and Richard's workshop is tailored towards those with little or no previous experience in digital imaging. Richard conducted a very informative session, not only on photoshop but on using all the tools in our cameras, including reading the histogram correctly.
9th February 2010 - Questions and Answers
Welcome back! The discussion mainly focused on the rules for entering our monthly competitions, and a reminder from Phill to label each entry clearly on the back top left-hand corner. Include the photographers name, a title (which is optional) and the type of print it is i.e. B&W Print; Coloured Print; Digital Print; or Digital Art. Please make Phill's life easier, and don't use the word DIGITAL on its own, you must specify what type of digital it is!
Another interesting discussion was a warning from an unfortunate club member who had to claim on his insurance policy recently. Read the fine print and make sure that your camera equipment is fully covered. Some policies will not cover cameras owned by professional photographers unless they are itemised.
BACK-UP, BACK-UP, BACK-UP We discussed the merits of having a BACK-UP regime which does not rely on one source of back-up. Do not use USB drives or CD/DVDs on their own - they fail! It is better to back-up to two external hard drives, one which is kept off site. Make a third back-up to CD/DVDs for a bit of extra insurance.
27th October 2009 - Competition Night
Morris Bills from the Australian Photographic Society judged 85 entries. See the 14 honours and 38 merits awarded on the October results page. Thank you Morris for your expert and detailed comments.
13th Oct 2009 - Middle East Travel Photography
Howard Speed talked about his trips to Morocco and Egypt. Stunning black and white photographs showing the exotic sights of the souks and medinas, snake charmers and colourful locals. Howard explained where each photo was taken and under what lighting conditions. He said that the clear air of Morocco produced light that was similar to Adelaide ie. approximately two stops between shadow and highlight. However, Egypt was a different matter, with dust and haze making photography challenging. A polarising filter was a necessity. Thank you Howard for an excellent presentation!
2nd September 2009 - Competition Night
The judge was Keith Seidel, President of the Edwardstown Camera club. He is a very experienced judge, and gave the club members excellent critique. Of the 88 entries, there were 13 honours and 18 merits awarded which are shown on the September results page.
8th September 2009 - GIMP Software
One of our club members, Desre Vermaak, enthusiastically demonstrated the advantages of using this Photoshop alternative. GIMP is free to download and very user friendly.
